Today is Mel's 65th birthday and we are leaving the ranch in Matheson to head toward Iowa.
And the birthday greeting below is especially for my dear husband. Happy 65th birthday Mel. LOL!
We left the ranch in Matheson, Colorado around 8:00 a.m. and were planning to stop in Elm Creek, Nebraska for the night. It was approximately 320 miles away, and we also lost an hour due to the time zone change.
We arrived at the turnoff to Elk Creek at 2:50 p.m. (see below).
Elm Creek is now 3 miles away. Elm Creek is a village in Buffalo County, Nebraska with a population of 979.
Elm Creek was founded in 1866 with the arrival of the Union Pacific Railroad to Buffalo County. Prior the construction of a railway station in Elm Creek, the area was heavily timbered with ash, elm, and cottonwood trees but they were almost all removed for use in building the railroad. The village was incorporated in 1887. The construction spurred the development of the wood-frame business, but much of it was destroyed in a fire in 1906; stone was used afterwards to rebuild. A contest for renaming the settlement, in hopes that the new name would bring prosperity, was held in 1912, but the prize was never awarded and the name remained unchanged.
We're spending a night at the 4 Seasons RV Park (Good Sam campground), located right off Highway 183 just south of Elm Creek, Nebraska. We were on site #30.

Mel walked over to the convenience store to get some beer. The cashier asked for his ID. When he found out that today was Mel's birthday, he told him to grab himself two brownies from the dessert case.
So Mel actually got to get a birthday brownies for his birthday and eat it too -- and he even shared one with me. Yum!
