BACK TO WORK ON THE CONTAINER HOME - (ANOTHER TRIP TO HOME DEPOT FOR VINYL PLANK FLOORING; PRE-STAINING, STAINING & FINISHING TRIM & DOORS; LAYING VINYL PLANK FLOORING) - Wednesday, July 3 - Friday, July 12, 2024

Wednesday, July 3, 2024

This morning we made another trip to Home Depot for a few supplies -- including a couple pieces of sheetrock, a bunch of vinyl plank flooring and a kitchen faucet.

After we got back home from Home Depot, Mel laid out some of the vinyl plank flooring to see how it was going to look in our container home (see below).

He then picked up the vinyl flooring, and went back to getting the window and door trims, as well as the baseboards ready to pre-stain, stain and then apply a finish. At this stage, he is placing brown paper behind what he plans to finish and holding it in place with blue painters tape.

As you can see in the picture below, Mel has all the brown paper held by the blue painters tape around all the windows and door/doorways and is ready to begin the pre-stain coat.

Shown above and below, Mel is working on pre-staining the barn door for our bedroom closet.

Today, Mel moved on to the staining process for all the trim wood around the windows and door, as well as the pocket and barn doors.

As you can see below, Mel has now gotten to staining the underbed storage unit in our bedroom.

Mel worked on staining all day long.

Today after letting all the stained trim and doors dry for over a day, Mel was able to apply a clear finish to protect the wood and stain, as well as enhance the final look. He used a polyurethane wood finish (see below).

Each step of the process takes time, as you have to wait for drying between steps.

Today with all the finish dry, Mel began to lay the vinyl plank flooring. He started from just inside the screen door entryway -- in the living and kitchen area, laying the flooring a piece at a time as he worked his way back to the laundry room area, then the bathroom and finally the bedroom.

Vinyl plank flooring has all the visual appeal of solid hardwood flooring and costs a fraction of the price of hardwood. It also can be installed in any room easily and efficiently.

Shown above, Mel has to cut some of the vinyl plank flooring to fit it into how he is laying it on the floor. He then staggered their ends by about 6 inches between each row for the best appearance.

Mel continued to lay the vinyl plank flooring and soon he had the entire living and kitchen area complete (see below).

Shown above, Mel now has the vinyl plank flooring installed in the bathroom area and has moved on to the bedroom area (see below).

By the end of the day, Mel finished laying the vinyl plank flooring in the bedroom. Pleasant dreams ya'll -- Mel may dream about laying vinyl plank flooring, but at least he won't have to walk a pirate's plank!
